A Lasting, Pleasant Aroma Effect in Plastic Products with Controlled-Release Technology
Colorex Fragrance Masterbatch is a range of highly concentrated aroma additives integrated into plastic products at the production stage, giving the final product a long-lasting, fresh and persistent scent. Fragrancing, which directly enhances product quality and appeal in the eyes of consumers, also masks unwanted plastic odors originating from the raw material with a pleasant essence.
When standard liquid essences are fed directly into extruders or injection molding machines, they evaporate or burn quickly at high processing temperatures, or cause slippage in the screw. Colorex Fragrance Masterbatch contains heat-resistant essential oils trapped (encapsulated) within a special micro-porous polymer carrier matrix. This advanced carrier technology ensures that the fragrance is protected from thermal shock during production and that it diffuses slowly from the surface throughout the product's service life, providing controlled release.
Key Advantages and Technical Features
Long-Lasting, Controlled Fragrance ReleaseThanks to its special porous carrier resin structure, it prevents the essence from evaporating all at once and delivers lasting fragrance performance for weeks and months.
High Thermal StabilityFormulated with aromatic components that withstand the operating temperatures of extrusion, blown film and injection molding processes.
Wide Essence and Aroma LibraryDozens of different fragrance options are offered on request, including Lavender, Vanilla, Lemon, Pine, Strawberry, Apple, Ocean Breeze, Baby Powder, Soap, Coffee and Spring Flowers.
Clean and Easy HandlingEliminates the dosing difficulties, machine contamination and occupational safety risks created by liquid essences; thanks to its pellet form, it mixes easily with the base raw material.
Mechanical and Optical CompatibilityWhen used at the recommended dosages, it does not adversely affect the tensile/break strength, seal strength or print quality of the plastic product.

Affected Properties / Effects on the Final Product
Controlled and lasting aroma release: Thanks to micro-porous carrier technology, it prevents the scent from evaporating all at once and provides a pleasant scent that lasts for months.
Masking of bad odors: Suppresses unwanted odors coming from the raw material or from garbage/waste contents with pleasant essences.
Added value and shelf appeal: Turns a standard plastic product into a premium, preferred product in the eyes of consumers.
Surface dryness: Unlike liquid essences, it leaves no oiliness or stickiness on the product surface.
Seal and print compatibility: At the recommended dosages, it does not affect the bottom seal of the bag or printing ink adhesion.
Effect on the Process and Production Line
Completely eliminates the screw slippage, dosing irregularity and machine contamination created by the use of liquid essences.
Freshens the working environment by spreading a pleasant scent inside the factory during production.
Frequently Asked Questions
The most frequently asked questions about fragrance masterbatch and their answers. If you cannot find what you are looking for, please contact our team.
What is Fragrance Masterbatch and how does it give plastic products a scent?
Fragrance Masterbatch is an additive in pellet form produced by trapping highly concentrated essence and perfume components inside a special polymer carrier. It is added to the plastic raw material during production; after the product is formed, the essence molecules within the polymer matrix move slowly toward the surface (migration/diffusion) and continuously release a pleasant scent into the environment.
What is the difference between "Odor Eliminating Masterbatch" and "Fragrance Masterbatch"?
The two products work on completely different principles. Odor Eliminating Masterbatch chemically and physically captures and traps the volatile gas molecules that cause bad odor in plastics (especially in recycled raw materials); it is itself odorless and leaves the product neutral. Fragrance Masterbatch, on the other hand, adds a distinct perfume/aroma scent such as lavender, vanilla or lemon to the product.
Which product should be preferred in recycled plastics?
In recycled (PCR) raw materials with a very heavy odor, using Fragrance Masterbatch alone can sometimes cause the bad odor and the perfume scent to mix. For the best result, the ideal engineering solution is first to neutralize the bad odor of the raw material with Colorex Odor Eliminating Masterbatch, and then to add a low ratio of Colorex Fragrance Masterbatch to the same formulation to give the product a fresh final scent.
Does the essence burn or evaporate at the high temperatures during production?
Colorex Fragrance Masterbatch is produced with a micro-porous carrier technology that protects heat-sensitive essential oils. At standard film extrusion, blow molding and injection molding temperatures in the range of 150°C – 230°C, the essence comes through the process without degrading. To keep fragrance loss to a minimum, it is recommended not to raise barrel temperatures higher than necessary.
How long does the fragrance effect last in a plastic product?
The persistence of the fragrance depends on the dosage used, the wall thickness of the product and the ambient conditions. In garbage bags or film rolls kept in closed packaging, the fragrance effect retains its first-day strength for 6 to 12 months. In injection molded parts used in the open air, thanks to controlled release, the fragrance effect continues for weeks/months.
What is the recommended let-down ratio (dosage)?
Depending on the desired fragrance intensity, the processing temperature and the thickness of the product, it is generally used at 0.5–3.0%. In thin garbage bag and film applications, 1.0–2.0% provides an ideal fragrance intensity, while 0.5–1.0% is sufficient for injection molded parts requiring a light fragrance note.
Which fragrance (essence) options are available?
Our standard product portfolio includes Lavender, Lemon, Pine, Vanilla, Strawberry, Green Apple, Ocean, Soap, Baby Powder, Jasmine, Rose and Coffee essences. Different perfume and essence requests specific to our customers' projects can also be developed quickly in our R&D laboratory.
Which polymer types is it compatible with?
It works in full compatibility with many thermoplastics, primarily polyethylene (LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE), polypropylene (PP), EVA, PVC, PS and TPE/TPU.
Does it affect printing on the film or the seal?
When used at the recommended let-down ratios (0.5–2.0%), it does not adversely affect the surface tension (corona level) of the film, printing ink adhesion or the cutting/seal strength of the bag.
How should Fragrance Masterbatch be stored in the factory?
Because fragrance masterbatches contain volatile aromatic components, the packaging should not be left open after opening. The unused portion should be kept in its original air- and moisture-tight barrier inner bag, tightly closed, in a cool (below 30°C) enclosed area away from direct sunlight. Otherwise the pellets start releasing their scent into the environment and may lose their active fragrance strength over time.
